Seek the depths

Ephesians 3: 8 Although I am less than the least of all the Lord’s people, this grace was given me: to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ,

As 10 year olds my friends and I dared each other to swim to the bottom of our local Olympic diving pool. I remember fighting and straining to touch the floor of the pool 5 meters below – often unsuccessful! At times it seemed there was no bottom to reach; nevertheless we enjoyed the fun of pushing through gallons of warm enveloping water. Occasionally the lifeguard would blow her whistle alerting everyone to make room for a serious diver 5 meters up. It was often the sight of those confident swimmers that encouraged me to seek the deeper waters, the bottom of the pool.

Writing to the Ephesian church Paul is speaking about the mystery of the gospel and his role in communicating it. His use of the word ‘unsearchable’ or inexhaustible in verse 8 is not an invitation to give up or not try. The riches of Christ are so vast that to explore them is to discover an endless grace, eternal salvation, unnumbered blessings. In verse 12 we are reminded that trust and faith in Jesus is the vehicle we use to plumb the depths of God confidently. Perhaps today you might explore searching the riches of Christ by becoming enveloped in the deep blessings of God. It was from such a place that Paul recognised we are more equipped to share with others. Dive in and plumb the depth of His unfathomable riches.
